Estadio Mateo Flores is Guatemala's national stadium and is named after Mateo Flores, a famous long distance runner from Guatemala. The stadium holds a total of 29,950 spectators and consists of an 8 lane synthetic running track and a sports field..

On October 16th 1996, 83 people in the stadium were killed due to excessive numbers of people entering the stadium. This was during a football game between Guatemala and Costa Rica in the qualifying rounds for the 1998 World Cup. Over 140 were also injured during the crush. After this event the capacity of the ground was reduced from 47,500 to 29,500.
