The Estadio Nacional de Lima is located in the capital city Lima.The stadium was inaugurated on October 27, 1952, and has the capacity for over 45,000 spectators.The official capacity was reduced to 42,000 in 1964.This was the result of a tragedy that occured at an international soccer match between Peru and Argentina.In the final two minutes of the match Peru had a goal disallowed, this enraged the home fans who started rioting.The police took the decision to close the exit gates and used tear gas to calm violent fans, this resulted in the asphyxia of more than 300 fans in the crush trying to get out of the stadium.
