Monster Park (also known as Candlestick Park, formerly known as 3Com Park) is home to the San Francisco Forty Niners American football team, and was home of the San Francisco Giants baseball team until 1999. The stadium was originally designed with baseball only in mind, but a number of design flaws were identified over time, and despite the odd final layout has proven to be more suitable for football.
The stadium was built in 1958-59, and was opened in April, 1960, seating 42,500 at the time. and was expanded to 61,000 during the summer and fall of 1971. It can currently seat 70,207 following several renovation of the stadium.
'The Beatles played their last ever official concert at Candlestick Park on August 29th 1966.
On October 17,1989 at 5:04 p.m. PDT, while the Giants prepared to host the neighboring Oakland Athletics in game 3 of the baseball championship series, a magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck about 60 miles southeast of the park. While the Bay Area suffered 69 fatalities and more than $10 billion in damage, no one at the stadium was injured. The series resumed here 11 days later, after minor repairs had been completed, but in the meantime the Forty Niners had had to relocate a game to Stanford Stadium.
